Manchester United have been linked with a new defender, so what do their fans need to know about him?

According to the Mirror, Manchester United are considering a January move for Torino full-back Matteo Darmian.

The Italian has reportedly been scouted by United manager Louis van Gaal and his versatility could prompt a bid when the transfer window reopens.

There is little doubt United need to strengthen in defence having not sufficiently done so during the summer, so for those fans eager to learn more about Darmian, here are five facts to get you started:

1) Darmian was born in Italy in 1989. He began his youth career at AC Milan in 2006 and remained at the club for four years. During that time he spent a spell on loan at Padova.

2) The reported United target later moved to Palermo (where he made 16 appearances) and then Torino (where he has played 115 games to date).

3) The 24-year-old is predominantly a right-back but he can also play as a left-back or as a right-sided midfielder.

4) Currently with a contract until the summer of 2017, Darmian has represented Italy at every level from under-17 to the senior side. He has 10 caps for Italy to date, since making his debut in May of this year.

5) The player has scored three senior goals in his career and he has also provided seven assists.
