Bordeaux without Liverpool loanee defender as they face Caen

Ligue 1 Logo

Desperate to keep up with Marseille in Ligue 1, Bordeaux will have to beat Caen without on loan Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori.

If Bordeaux want to keep pace with Marseille at the top of the league, they need to beat Caen without their Liverpool loan star Tiago Ilori, but they do have the goals and excellent play of Diego Rolan up front, he could be the difference on Sunday afternoon.

Injuries have left the Bordeaux defence very short in the centre, with Ilori and Ludovic Sané out, midfielder Gregory Sertic will have to drop back into the back four. This is more of a blow as he is Les Girondins most influential player in the middle of the park.

With Thomas Touré suspended and Wahbi Khazri’s involvement in Tunisia’s AFCON qualifiers, the midfield needs some shuffling too. Diego Rolan will support Cheick Diabaté in attack, with Julien Faubert coming in on the right.

Despite not winning any of their last six games, Patrice Garande will once again stick to the players that he has mostly used this season.

Jean-Jacques Pierre is still returning from injury, so Yrondu Musavu-King continues at centre-back, he scored his first-ever goal for SMC in the defeat against Marseille.

Caen’s midfield has been their best feature this season. The power and forward runs of N’Golo Kante, the trickery of Lenny Nangis and the experience and guile of Julien Féret has caused some teams problems, they have just lacked the goals upfront from Mathieu Duhamel.

Bordeaux need to win at home if they want to be serious contenders for the top three and with Caen struggling, Willy Sagnol will except nothing less than three points. The away side has only won this fixture twice since 1989, but the last victory came in 2011 when Caen scored a 90th minute winner.

It will take something similar for Caen to get the win on Sunday. There is some pressure on Bordeaux to win this one, especially with Caen’s recent record. The away side need to display the same fight they showed against Marseille, if they do, they might have a chance against this Bordeaux side with the injuries they have.
