West Ham supporters were delighted to have the 31-year-old striker scoring again.
Southampton are most certainly the surprise package of the Premier League season so far. The Saints sit third in the table after eight games, just six points behind league-leaders Chelsea.
But, just a place below them in the standings, West Ham United have surprised almost as much. Indeed, only a defeat to Southampton themselves separates the two sides.
And, in beating Burnley 3-1 to take them to fourth in the table, West Ham were given an extra treat at Turf Moor: a goal from Carlton Cole - just his second of the league campaign and first since August.
"It's my birthday tomorrow and I asked the lads to get me a result because I am going out with my friends here in the north west this evening," manager Sam Allardyce told BBC Sport after the game.
"Our quality, especially with the first two goals, was the difference. They were two outstanding crosses, and two outstanding headers.
"Diafra Sakho is a determined lad, and he has six in all games now. We look like we have goals in the team."
But what a bonus for the West ham boss to have Cole scoring for his side once again. It seems everything that could possibly go right for the Hammers is doing exactly that.
On Twitter after the game, meanwhile, fans from east London expressed their love and support for the 31-year-old striker. Some did it genuinely, others ironically. Here are the best of those tweets!
