PHOTOS: The reason Newcastle United v Leicester City was delayed by an hour

The big screen at St James Park had been damaged by the wind on Tyneside.

What a week Martin Atkinson has had.

He was at the centre of an almost war like atmosphere in Serbia during the European Championship qualifier between them and Albania.

He had to abandon the game after a brawl broke out. This all came after a drone was flown over the Partizan Stadium in Belgrade with an Albania flag attached.

It was one of the more bizarre reasons for a match to be called off - today, he almost equalled it.

The Newcastle United v Leicester City game today had to be put off for an hour - because of fears that the the brand new big screen at the club might not be secure.

It was only installed at Newcastle United's St James Park during the international break. However, it had not been tested against the Tyneside wind, which caused some damage which left Atkinson and staff at the club concerned.

So with that in mind the game was suspended, with Atkinson also not allowing fans in to the Newcastle ground until he was assured of its safety.

Eventually the game got under way at 4.00 pm, Newcastle United going on to win their first Premier League game of the season 1-0 thanks to a Gabriel Obertan goal.

Some have criticised Atkinson for overkill but he did the right thing in the situation and no harm was done. Newcastle fans might be hoping they can kick off an hour late every week after the result.
