On this day: Chelsea receive £17.7m, Januzaj happy and why Benteke stayed

Adrian Mutu

On the 18th October 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 18th October 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 18th October 2013…

Mutu money

Chelsea received a massive windfall after a long and arduous compensation chase.

It was ruled that both Juventus and Livorno would have to share the cost of a £17.7 million package for the departure of Adrian Mutu in 2004.

Mutu was sacked by Chelsea in October 2004 after failing a drugs test.

However after he was signed by nothing by Juventus and Livorno on a co-ownership deal Chelsea argued they should be due a fee and FIFA agreed - with interest making the near £18 million total paid to Chelsea by the Italian clubs.

Mutu is now back playing in his native Romania and his career is dwindling down quicker than his Chelsea career did.

Adnan wants United

Adnan Januzaj was seemingly ready to commit his future to Manchester United.

He was speaking to media in Kosovo, mainly about his potential international career with the country.

But he made it clear that he was happy at United, despite rumoured interest from Paris Saint-Germain:

"I am happy at Manchester United and I want to commit myself 100 per cent in every game to do my best. I want to help Manchester United win the Premier League and become the best player in the world."

Lambert on Benteke

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert was discussing how he managed to convince Christian Benteke to turn down overtures from Tottenham Hotspur.

It looked like Benteke was on his way last summer when he handed in a transfer request.

However Lambert revealed how he changed the Belgian's mind:

I was not aware we got a bid, that’s why it did not bother me - I was on holiday.

“But when I got back it took me a day to sort it out. I bolted the door - and I had Mike Tyson in one corner!

“He’s a good guy and I never had a problem. I never said anything that will shock you, I just had a chat with him to see where he was."

Benteke eventually signed a new deal, but unfortunately spent most of last season out of action with a ruptured Achilles tendon - also missing the World Cup.
