Michael Owen backs Southampton to make Europe after beating 'embarrassing' Sunderland

The former Premier League striker thinks there is more chance of them making Europe than being relegated.

Michael Owen has told Southampton's critics to 'hang their head in shame' after they beat Sunderland with an historic 8-0 victory on Saturday.

The Saints couldn't stop scoring at St Mary's against the Black Cats, who Owen branded as 'embarrassing.'

And the former Premier League striker thinks there is more chance of Southampton qualifying for Europe than getting relegated - which is what many predicted during pre-season.

"Hang your head in shame those of you who said Southampton would go down after their summer exodus. More chance of getting in Europe!" he wrote on Sportlobster.

He added: "My word. That's embarrassing. Getting done by 7 having driven all that way. I feel for Sunderland fans. Still time for more!"

And, of course, Southampton did score one more...

Former Manchester United & Everton defender Phil Neville was equally critical of Sunderland, keeping his appraisal of their performance rather succinct:

Quite.
