Martin Keown: Released by Liverpool, West Ham defender is now at the top level

The former Arsenal man has sung the praises of Aaron Cresswell.

Martin Keown thinks Aaron Cresswell is a 'shining example' to his fellow young Englishmen after a phenomenal start to life at West Ham.

Cresswell, 24, was released by Liverpool at youth level but worked his way back up the football pyramid through spells with Tranmere Rovers and Ipswich.

The defender then left Championship side Ipswich Town this summer to move to West Ham United - and hasn't looked back since.

The Reds' loss, then, appears to be very much Sam Allardyce's gain, with Keown singing Cresswell's praises, as well as complimenting Arsenal loanee Carl Jenkinson.

"Carl Jenkinson has the potential to be a top player and Aaron Cresswell is a shining example to any young English professional," Keown wrote in his weekly column for the Daily Mail.

"Released by Liverpool at youth level, he kept going, worked his way up via Tranmere and Ipswich and is now carving out a career at the top level."

As Opta stats show, Cresswell - an ever-present for the Hammers this season - has won as many tackles as any West Ham defender, while creating more chances and landing more accurate crosses than anyone else in Allardyce's back four.
