Louis van Gaal gives injury update on Manchester United duo Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera

Angry Louis van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says that Ander Herrera could play against West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Monday, while Michael Carrick could find himself on the substitutes’ bench.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has given a strong hint that star midfielder Ander Herrera could play against West Bromwich Albion on Monday.

The 25-year-old suffered a rib fracture earlier this month and was expected to be out for ‘weeks’.

However, Van Gaal has revealed that the Spaniard, a £29 million signing from Athletic Bilbao in the summer, could feature against the Baggies in the Premier League clash at The Hawthorns.

‘Herrera is a fit player and he only had a rib fracture so we can play him with a corset’, the Dutchman told MUTV. ‘Then he can play. But, of course, I have to select him first’.

Herrera has been a key player for the Red Devils so far this season and has created five chances in as many Premier League appearances. The 25-year-old has scored two goals and has a pass accuracy of 89%, while winning 59% of his duels.

Another player on the sidelines at the moment is Michael Carrick. The England international midfielder, who joined United from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2006 for a reported transfer fee of £18.6m, has been out with an ankle injury.

However, the 33-year-old is now on course to making full recovery and could make his return in a United shirt against West Ham United in a Under-21 Premier League clash at Rush Green sports ground next Friday.

‘He also needs match rhythm and, until now, he has not played a match so we have to give him a chance to play a match’, said Van Gaal. ‘Maybe next Friday with the second squad. Maybe we'll use him on the bench [on Monday] but I don't know’.

During a press conference on Friday, Van Gaal said that the number of players on his injury list is now four (click here to read more). It seems that gradually the United squad is taking full shape.
