On this day: Mignolet wins POTM and Van Persie departure caused 'unrest'

On the 17th October 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 17th October 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 17th October 2013…

RVP sale

A year ago today and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was having to admit that the sale of Robin van Persie had damaged the side in 2012.

He was talking at the 2013 AGM, in which he admitted that selling captain Van Persie to United caused their form to dip - as RVP led United to the Premier League title with goals galore.

Wenger said of letting his captain go:

"We lost Van Persie, created a lot of unrest and destabilised the team. But from November to May team showed fantastic mental strength."

In the end Arsenal fans enjoyed getting the better of Van Persie last season, as United slumped to a seventh place finish.

This season will be tight.

Mignolet rewarded

Simon Mignolet was rewarded the September Player of the Month award at Liverpool. The Belgian joined the club for £9 million last summer and had a good start to his career with The Reds.

Mignolet said of the award:

"Every time you come into a new club, when you get recognised by the supporters, it makes it easier to play on the pitch and I'm very happy and pleased I've won the Standard Chartered Player of the Month.

"I'm looking forward to keeping my performance up now and making sure I do the same throughout the whole season."

A year down the line and criticism has recently been aimed at Mignolet by some pundits, while the media are convinced Liverpool are looking to replace him with Victor Valdes.
