Alan Smith picks strongest Arsenal side including major absence

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has made some big calls with his assessment on the club's strongest current XI.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has given his thoughts on Arsene Wenger’s first choice XI and there’s a big absence.

Smith has suggested that there’s no place in the team for Mesut Ozil while also suggesting that Theo Walcott should slot in despite not having played a game for the club yet this season.

Smith has also overlooked currently injured striker Olivier Giroud in favour of £16 million summer signing Danny Welbeck, who has made a big impact at the club since his move down south.

Ozil has struggled to match the impact he had at the start of last season, which has led to widespread frustration at the club and questions over why he’s not been able to perform more consistently.

Arsenal will now be given an extended spell to see what life would be like without Ozil available, as he’s carrying an injury which keeps him out of action until the winter.

Walcott is expected to put on Arsenal colours again this evening, for the under-21s and as far as Smith is concerned, his return can’t come a moment to soon for Wenger’s team.
