Three key areas ex-Spurs star Dawson betters Arsenal's Mertesacker, ahead of Hull clash

How former Tottenham Hotspur defender Michael Dawson compares to his Hull weekend opponent Per Mertesacker.

Deemed surplus to requirements at Tottenham over the summer, Michael Dawson is enjoying a successful season with Hull City.

The defender is rated by Opta powered website as one of the top 10 players in the Premier League so far this season.

He takes on old foes Arsenal this weekend in Saturday's fixture at The Emirates, and will have to be at his best to help the Tigers keep the Gunners from scoring.

His form should make him confident of doing so, the 30-year-old comes out on top compared with Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker in three key defensive areas.

  TeamTacklesInterceptionsShots BlockedEffective ClearancesMins Played
Michael Dawson Hull City 5 12 12 58 450
Per Mertesacker Arsenal 3 13 2 29 540

Mertesacker, the same age as his opponent, narrowly comes out in terms of interceptions, yet Dawson is superior with regards to tackles won, shots blocked, and effective clearances.

Some of this can be accredited to the fact Hull face more defensive work than the Gunners do. Teams have completed 693 passes in the final third against them, compared to 494 against Arsenal.

Yet Dawson has reached his high level of performance, playing a game less than Mertesacker has so far this season.

None of this is to say one is better than the other, but if Arsenal are to find a way past Hull this weekend, they face a defender currently playing at a level above their star defender, and knowing how important the German is to their defence - they will not be in for an easy task.
