Schar rejects renewal: Inter and Manchester United hover

In-demand Basel defender Fabian Schär is reportedly holding out against a contract renewal with Inter and Manchester United waiting in the wings.

Italian transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà believes that Inter are pushing hard to try and sign Fabian Schär, but Manchester United may pounce.

The 22-year-old has been watched by Inter scouts on several occasions and is also said to be on Arsenal and Tottenham's radar.

It seems almost certain that Basel will have to resign themselves to losing Schär because his contract expires next summer, so they will most likely look to try and get a fee in January rather than watching him leave for free.

According to Italian journalist Pedullà, Schär has been unresponsive to Basel's attempts to extend his current deal and January could be the time for a transfer.

Inter director Piero Ausilio has made no secret of his desire to sign Schär, but the player may want to hold out and see if he can attract a side with greater financial clout.

Serie A teams are struggling to match the wages paid by their Premier League counterparts and Manchester United are said to be interested in Schär too, which would be a much more lucrative option for him.

It seems that Schär could be a real bargain because although Basel have valued him at around £10 million, they are in a weak position to negotiate.
