Reported Mourinho target not signing contract renewal

Juventus don't seem to be close to persuading Stephan Lichtsteiner to sign a contract extension and Chelsea may smell a bargain.

Stephan Lichtsteiner is nicknamed 'Forrest Gump' for his attacking runs from the right-back position and Jose Mourinho is said to be a fan of his.

The 30-year-old has been at Juventus since moving from Lazio in 2011, but his time with the Old Lady may be coming to an end.

Lichtsteiner's current contract expires in June 2015 and despite his stated desire to stay where he is, negotiations over an extension have become increasingly thorny.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Lichtsteiner's future is on Juventus's agenda after the player returned from international duty with Switzerland.

However, Juventus have had little success in trying to get the ex-Lille man to put pen to paper on a three-year extension worth around £1.8 million per year.

Lichtsteiner is said to want nothing less than £2.4 million and won't compromise while Juventus insist that they won't go that high.

The lack of any movement in discussions suggests that Lichtsteiner's agent may be ready to use the threat of his client becoming a free agent as a bargaining chip.

Juventus may instead decide that they would rather sell Lichtsteiner off while they can still get a fee. If so, Mourinho might be tempted to put in a modest offer knowing there's a chance he could get his man for free next summer if Juve reject it.
