On this day: Falcao 'worth €200m' said Monaco boss; Monreal on Arsenal switch

On the 16th October 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 16th October 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 16th October 2013…

Falc-how much?

AS Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri was firing off warning shots over his star striker Radamel Falcao - as teams looked to capitalise on his apparent early unrest in the principality.

He had only been at the club a number of months but the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid were believed to be considering a move for the player, as rumours of him being unsettled spread.

But Ranieri stated:

"If Gareth Bale is €100million then how much is Falcao? He is €200million [£168million]."

But, after a serious knee injury, Falcao's value plummeted. A year on and he has been loaned out to Manchester United, while Ranieri clings on to his new job as the Greek national team boss.

12 months is a long time.

It seems very unlikely that Manchester United will be paying £168 million on Falcao at the end of the season.

Happy Nacho

A year ago today and Nacho Monreal was discussing his first nine months at Arsenal.

Arsenal signed him in January from Malaga and he believed he left the club at the perfect time and he was enjoying his spell in North London.

“When I was offered the chance to come here, I was in the best moment of my career. I had a lot of confidence, I had [manager Manuel] Pellegrini’s trust, I felt that I played a key role at Malaga and with the national side, and I think I came here at the right time."

A year on and Monreal remains an important member of Arsenal's squad. He may not be a regular starter because of Kieran Gibbs' ever emerging form but he seems just as happy now as he did 12 months ago.
