Mario Balotelli explains the importance of English talent at Liverpool

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli believes a core English spine at Liverpool is beneficial for the club.

Mario Balotelli may have been the marquee arrival at Anfield this summer, but the £16 million recruit from AC Milan was one of a plethora of signings as Liverpool adopted an aggressive strategy in the transfer market.

He joined Dejan Lovren, Lazar Markovic, Emre Can, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert at Melwood, while Divock Origi is set to follow.

It is the English talent that has left the greatest impression on the Italy international though, as he talks up the high quality of talent possessed by Lallana, midfielder Jordon Henderson and superstar-in-the-making Raheem Sterling.

“I didn’t really know much about the club before coming here, but I’ve been really surprised… I knew they were a very good team, but I didn’t know they were as good as they are," said Balotelli, as quoted by talkSPORT.

“Of course we need to improve many things because we have started off not very good, but I think the players here are amazing.

"It’s good to see young English players here too: Sterling, Henderson, Lallana. I think the more players you have like this, the better."

He continued: "Maybe over time you have got used to not seeing so many good young English players like that, but now we are seeing some – it’s good they are in my team."
