Spanish newspaper and website Marca has detailed the qualities of Real Madrid transfer target Lucas Silva, which also describe why he’d be perfectly suited to Arsenal.
Real’s apparent interest in the Cruzeiro star seems to be born out of acceptance that Sami Khedira will leave the Bernabeu rather than sign a new contract, with Arsenal tipped to make a move for the German.
However, should Arsenal target Silva over a move for the World Cup winner?
“The youngster boasts fantastic vision and a great range of passing - he regularly turns and switches play with Xabi Alonso-like long balls,” writes Marca.
“Though he is often tasked with building from the back and starting counter-attacks, he is extremely tidy in possession, protecting the ball well and rarely trying to beat players or to do anything fancy like other Brazilians. This is shown by his pass completion rate of around 95% in league action.”
The point about his ability on the counter attack is certainly relevant to the current Arsenal side because of the pace they have in their attack, which is well suited to exploiting weaknesses in the opposition on the counter.
Arsenal have pace in wide areas, which is provided by the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, which allows the Gunners to hurt sides quickly after absorbing a great deal of pressure.
Whether Arsene Wenger would change his mind over a target he’s reportedly been interested in for a number of months and there is a valid argument to suggest that Arsenal don’t need another creative player in the middle of their team.
However, any holding player Arsenal sign in the future has to be able to fit in with Arsene Wenger’s style of play and make the most of Arsenal’s strengths when the side is on top in matches but also under pressure.
His possession stats are also impressive and would be useful for a side that like to dominate the ball and grind sides down over 90 minutes, looking for the opportunities which open up as opposition sides grow tired.
Khedira is the more likely target for Arsenal but Marca has certainly detailed why Silva would be a great addition to the current Arsenal side.
