Mario Balotelli compares Steven Gerrard to Italian footballing legend

Balotelli has said his new skipper is as good as Andrea Pirlo.

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has compared captain Steven Gerrard to Italian football legend Andrea Pirlo.

Pirlo has been hailed by many as one of the finest midfielders to grace the game with his vision, passing ability and set-piece play; all qualities that shine time and again when he played for his national side and during his time at AC Milan, as well as with his current club Juventus.

Ever since joining Liverpool this summer for £16 million, the charismatic forward has been impressed by the 34-year-old after seeing him up close.

He's quoted in Sport Magazine, saying: “Gerrard is an amazing player. I had really not seen much of him before this season, apart from for England, but wow. I think of him as being at the same level as Pirlo.

“Vision, technique, but he is powerful as well. Stevie can do anything. It’s going to be very difficult for the team to find another player like him in the future.”

Those who have watched and played with Gerrard over the years know the incredibly positive contribution he has made to the Liverpool side. He has played in several positions during his time at the club, further forward, to the right of the midfield, right-back, but nowadays manager Brendan Rodgers wants him to play in the holding midfield role in order to get the best out of his passing range.

Balotelli also talks of other things in his interview, including being surprised at the quality of the players currently at Anfield, and that the side is still aiming for the Premier League summit after a stuttering start to the season which sees them nine points off Chelsea, who are setting the pace in the early stages of the season.
