Andrea Dossena was an expensive flop for Liverpool and now the 33-year-old is without a club and regretting the way things turned out at Anfield.
Liverpool paid Udinese an undisclosed fee believed to be around £7 million for Dossena in 2008 after he had impressed in Serie A.
But Dossena never managed to adapt to life in the Premier League and his 18 months at Liverpool were very forgettable.
Since leaving Liverpool, Dossena has spent time at Napoli, Palermo and Sunderland, but he is currently a free agent.
"I only realise now how prestigious the Liverpool shirt is and how precious that experience was that helped me mature so much," Dossena told Gianluca Di Marzio.
"I didn't manage to enjoy that time and show what I was capable of. That may be because it was my first time abroad.
"I was unsettled by a football culture that is totally different to ours. Rafa Benitez, in spite of being Spanish, had been following an English model of coaching for years.
"Liverpool had just been in the Champions League final, so when we played against the biggest teams like Real Madrid it was just normal and we wanted to win everything.
"It was only when I joined Napoli afterwards that I realised how hard it was for a club like them not be involved in big games like that."
