Could AC Milan beat Manchester United and Arsenal to £37m star?

AC Milan

Serie A side AC Milan are interested in William Carvalho.

Italian side AC Milan do not quite befit the phrase 'sleeping giant', but they have dozed off a little over the past few seasons.

A succession of manager changes has led to Milan missing out on Champions League football in successive years, but there is new hope under new boss Filippo Inzaghi.

For Milan really to announce themselves as being back, a stellar signing is essential, and not the sort of deadline day desperation we saw at them loaning Fernando Torres, a player who perfectly represents what they were and now are.

They do reportedly hold interest in signing Portuguese midfield prospect William Carvalho, with Tuttomercatoweb reporting it is their 'dream' to pull off a transfer.

That is easier said than done, as the report acknowledges, their finances are likely to stop them signing the midfielder.

Carvalho has been strongly touted as a Manchester United and Arsenal signing, but neither have been convinced yet to sanction spending the £37 million Sporting Lisbon want for him.

The Portuguese international has played only one full season with sporting, so holding back is understandable, but it means both could be beaten to the punch.

The decisive factor is going to be AC Milan qualifying for the Champions League. Finishing eighth last season they failed to make it into Europe at all.

While that is reminiscent of United, Milan do not have the spending power the Red Devils have which have enabled them to secure huge transfers, even if they do have a history equally as rich.

Presently AC Milan sit fifth in Serie A, three points behind third placed side, Sampdoria. While Juventus and Roma are near certainties to finish in the top two, landing in the final qualification spot for the Champions League - Italy only gets three - is wide open.

Milan will consider they have just as much a chance as Sampdoria or Udinese above them, and if they can bounce back and reclaim their seat at the top table, a deal like Carvalho could have a chance of happening.
