Wenger: Why I kept Ozil on even after he told me he had an injury, AGAIN

Arsene Wenger has told how the need to get a result led to him keeping an injured Mesut Ozil on the pitch in Arsenal's defeat to Chelsea.

Did Arsenal make a mistake keeping Mesut Ozil on the pitch against Chelsea?

Not just from a playing perspective, but from a fitness one, the German has now been ruled out with an injury for around three months,

Speaking to the press late on Thursday, manager Arsene Wenger revealed the Gunners record signing told him he was injured against the Blues.

The Frenchman went onto explain that his desperation to get a result saw him keep Ozil on.

"He had a little problem just before he went out at half-time. He had a little pain with his knee, he felt a crack.

"I said to our physio to keep an eye on him and if there was anything wrong with him, tell me because when you're 1-0 down, you want to keep your offensive players on the pitch."

Clearly this turned out to be a terrible mistake. Ozil contributed nothing in the second half, and with talented players in need of game time on the bench like Lukas Podolski, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joel Campbell, it appears a naive choice.

It is not the first time Arsenal's handling of Ozil has come into question. After he picked up a hamstring injury against Bayern Munich in March, and was substituted at half-time, the former Real Madrid star revealed he picked up an injury far earlier.

Ozil said at the time: "Now it's clear: During the match against Bayern I suffered a muscle injury in the second minute. I tried to give my best and played until the end of the first half."
