US national team fans took to Twitter on Tuesday night to have their say on Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore's goalscoring performance in the 1-1 draw with Honduras.

With the Landon Donovan era officially done and dusted, Jozy Altidore appears to be making his case to be the new face of the US national team.

The Sunderland striker scored his side’s only goal in a 1-1 friendly draw with Honduras in Boca Raton, Florida, as a late Maynor Figueroa header from a free-kick denied the home team the victory.

Altidore’s struggles at the club level have been well-documented at this point, with the imposing front man finding himself behind both Connor Wickham and now Steven Fletcher in the pecking order at the Stadium Light, having netted just once in 34 top-flight appearances.

The 24-year-old has conceded that he will actively look for a move in the winter if he continues to be confined to the Black Cats bench but, while his reputation in England is far from glowing, he remains an integral part of head coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s line-up.

Showing clear signs of what he can deliver on Tuesday night when on form, US fans were certainly encouraged by his performance judging by the reaction, and one would hope he can now build on a positive spell with the national team to help get out of his Sunderland slump.
