The top four players linked with Manchester United this week

Old Trafford 3

Here are the best four players to have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent days.

Manchester United continue to be linked with a whole host of players even though the next transfer window is still more than two months away.

They may have spent big in the summer, but that has not stopped United being linked with some quality midfielders and experienced centre-backs, so below are the top four players to be tipped for a move to Old Trafford in the last few days:

Ilkay Gundogan

When fit and on form, Gundogan is one of the best midfielders in Europe. Blighted by injury in recent times, the Borussia Dortmund player is finally set to return to first-team action, and it has not taken long for United to be linked once again.

Gundogan is said to be an alternative to Arturo Vidal and Kevin Strootman – two players who would vastly improve United’s central areas but are seemingly unattainable for that very reason.

In truth Gundogan is just as unlikely, but with a contract that expires in the summer of 2016, United would be wise to test the water just in case.

Ron Vlaar

The transfer rumour that will not go away, with a contract that expires next summer the Aston Villa defender is reportedly a priority target for Louis van Gaal. His experience would benefit United and he would be relatively cheap if he moved after Christmas, but Villa are likely to have other ideas,, and will look to tie the 29-year-old down to a new deal deal if at all possible.

Nigel de Jong

Another rumour that has been resurrected following the summer, AC Milan midfielder De Jong is said to remain on van Gaal’s wanted list.

With Daley Blind and Ander Herrera settling well, and Michael Carrick back from injury, it would be surprising if De Jong did arrive, given that United are likely to want a world-class box-to-box midfielder next summer.

This was the surprising name on the list, with the Sporting Lisbon defender revealing that United were interested in bringing him to the club in the close-season.

For now he remains in Portugal, but there have been suggestions United maintain an interest and could look to reunite him with former teammate Marcos Rojo.
