Three unlikely stars of Tottenham's season so far: Two Frenchmen feature

White Hart Lane

Tottenham Hotspur's season so far has been full of ups and downs. Here are three unlikely heroes from their start to the Premier League campaign.

Etienne Capoue

Frenchman Etienne Capoue's quality is clear for all to see. His passing ability is impressive, while the protection he offers his back four takes things to another level.

But quite the impact the 26-year-old has had makes him an unlikely star for Spurs so far this season, as he has convincingly outperformed his team-mates in key areas.

Younes Kaboul Spurs DF 257 7 7 630
Danny Rose Spurs DF 235 13 7 605
Eric Dier Spurs DF 225 16 7 515

As Opta stats show, Capoue's 454 accurate passes are over 150 more than that of his nearest rival Christian Eriksen, while the French midfielder has also won more tackles than any other Tottenham player in the Premier League.

It's been a solid start to the campaign, then, for Capoue. Mauricio Pochettino will no doubt hope his team-mates can learn a trick or two off the 26-year-old.

Nacer Chadli

Easily his side's biggest surprise package so far this term, Nacer Chadli is Tottenham's top scorer by a distance after seven league games.

With four goals to his name, the Belgium international (who also recently scored for his country against Andorra) is two ahead of nearest rivals Eric Dier and Denmark midfielder Eriksen, while he also registered an assist.

Many critics have commented on the increased tempo to the 25-year-old's game and he is certainly looking a different player to the hit-and-miss winger that graced White Hart Lane last season.

Younes Kaboul

Spurs captain Younes Kaboul is an interesting inclusion for the very simple reason that the Frenchman did not start the season well.

Kaboul received plenty of criticism for his early performances but being named Pochettino's captain may have just given him the confidence he needed, as he produced a stunning defensive display in the north London derby against Arsenal and then helped Tottenham keep a clean sheet against Southampton.

Despite his slow start to the season, meanwhile, Kaboul has won more interceptions, made more clearances and made more blocks than any other Spurs defender this term.

It is the fact that the 28-year-old has turned his form around that makes him an 'unlikely' star for the club.
