Comparing the Manchester United player with the Real Madrid defender.
Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane recently admitted that the presence of Phil Jones at Manchester United prevented him from moving to Old Trafford seemingly due to the competition for places. So how do the two players compare?
Over the last three years, Varane has made 79 appearances for Real while Jones has played 107 times for United since he arrived at the club. But looking at their performances in their respective leagues, it seems United may not have missed out.
Jones has a passing accuracy of 91.46 per cent this season, compared with Varane's 89.6 per cent. The England international also averages considerably more tackles per game (3.33 compared with 1.4) and more than three-times as many interceptions per game (5.67 compared with 1.6).

The United defender also averages considerably more clearances, with the Real player just pipping Jones when it comes to aerial battles won.
There is absolutely no doubt that Varane is a fine defender who has blossomed since his move to the Bernabeu, but Jones's influence is often forgotten, despite the fact that his performances and statistics suggest he is growing into a mightily impressive centre-back.
