Manchester United play-maker Juan Mata had tweeted his support to Thiago Alcantara after the Bayern Munich midfielder suffered yet another injury blow.
Thiago tore a ligament in training on Wednesday and now faces what his club have called “a lengthy absence.”
It is the latest in an increasingly long line of setbacks for the 23-year-old, who has managed to play just 25 matches for Bayern since his £21million move to the Allianz Arena in the summer of 2013.
Thiago had long been linked with a move to United, with both Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes said to be keen on the player.
But reports later came out suggesting Ryan Giggs did not see the Spaniard as a United player and Moyes pulled out of a transfer, while other claims simply suggested the player was keen on reuniting with his former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola in Germany.
Whatever the truth, the simple fact is Thiago has had a terrible year in terms of injury, and this from a player who made 100 appearances for Barca despite only being in his early twenties.
He has time to get back on track, but with each new injury setback one wonders if Thiago will ever be the player he has the potential to be.
Mata appears to think he will soon be back doing what he does best however, with his message reading, “Much encouragement. Soon you’ll be smiling again.”
