How West Ham have created chance of sensible signing for Millwall

Matty Etherington has been training with West Ham to stay fit and could now sign a deal with Millwall.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United star Matt Etherington is on trial with Championship side Millwall.

Etherington has been training with West Ham as he fights to stay fit, with Ian Holloway’s club offering him the chance to earn himself a permanent move in English football’s second flight.

“Millwall have taken former Tottenham and West Ham winger Matthew Etherington on trial in view of offering him a permanent move,” reports the Standard.

“Etherington has been training with West Ham in order to keep match fit and is looking to secure a switch to the capital, where he has been based for most of his life.”

It’s an ironic twist that West Ham have helped train a player who could now move to their arch rivals in the Championship, but it’s a potential deal that makes sense for Holloway and Millwall.

Millwall are among a group of sides together in the middle of the Championship table, all looking for a run of results which will put them within touching distance of the play-off places.

Should Holloway take a gamble and urge his club to offer Etherington a deal, he can bring experience and versatility in wide positions into the equation.

He’s experienced Premier League football and what it’s like to earn the right to play in the top division and he can play down either flank, which provides Holloway with different squad options.

It makes sense all round and West Ham have played their part in what could be a savvy signing for Holloway.
