Romelu Lukaku was on fire last season, but the Everton striker has failed to lit up the Premier League so far this campaign.
Then on loan from Chelsea, the Belgium international striker scored 15 goals, provided six assists and created 32 chances in 31 Premier League appearances.
Signed on a permanent contract for £28 million in the summer transfer window, Lukaku has failed to recover that form so far this season.
Although the 21-year-old has been played out wide on occasions, two goals, one assist and three chances created in seven league appearances is still a poor return.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez, though, is not too concerned and believes that the youngster will soon regain his old form, while giving two reasons behind his under-par performances in the opening weeks of the campaign.
‘The situation we have is that he was unable to get a full pre-season after the World Cup and the knock he had so early in the season meant we couldn’t allow him to have a proper introduction into work’, the Spaniard told The Liverpool Echo. ‘He had to get himself fit by playing games and now we’re paying for that.
‘We all need to understand that he is still doing a good job for the side and he will get to a position where he is 100% fit and he will be able to enjoy his football...
‘He’s got an incredible desire to be successful for the team. Rom knows what he has to do off the ball and takes things onboard well. He’s just not 100%’.
Lukaku’s failure to find the net regularly has coincided with Everton struggling for wins. Heading in this weekend’s round of matches, the Toffees find themselves 17th in the Premier League table with six points from seven matches, just two points above the relegation zone.
Everton will take on Aston Villa at Goodison Park on Saturday, and Martinez will certainly hope that Lukaku gets a goal or two against the Villans.
