The Daily Star claims Arsenal are ahead of Chelsea in the race to sign 20-year-old Talisca from Benfica.
The attacking star has already moved to the top of the goalscorers list for Portugal’s top division and the Star claims Arsenal have already made contact with his agent after scouting him several times.
“Gunners scouts watched him in action for Brazil's under-21 side against Bolivia on Friday. It was the third time Arsene Wenger has had the youngster watched, and contact has now been made with his agent,” reports the national daily.
Whether another attacking midfielder and striker is what the Arsenal squad needs is debatable.
Arsenal are well stocked in terms of players who can play the number ten role in the side and Arsene Wenger signed Danny Welbeck to increase his attacking options at the back end of the summer transfer window.
With Joel Campbell among those struggling for first team football at the club, the logic behind signing Talisca for Arsenal would be confusing from Arsene Wenger.
There has been a strain on the strikers at the club given Olivier Giroud’s injury but Danny Welbeck has come in, he’s found form and he’s looked fit and in top shape in the process.
Arsenal’s persistent scouting of Talisca suggests that Wenger has been an admirer of him for some time but it has all the makings of a long term deal rather than a short term one.
With the pressure on Wenger to back up the FA Cup success of last season, it doesn’t represent the potential high profile attacking signing that some Arsenal fans may have been hoping for.
However, Wenger has taken this sort of player in the past and made him into a first team star and there’s no reason he can’t do so again.
