Arsenal have been here before.
Supporters may have lost count of the number of times Arsene Wenger has let a top transfer target go - only for that very same player to sign of a rival soon after.
Similar has also happened when it comes to existing Arsenal players, Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri and more leaving north London for sides often higher than them in the Premier League table.
And Fabregas is a case in point - as the Spaniard comes under both categories. Not only did he leave Arsenal for Barcelona, he then returned to England with Chelsea.
According to the London Evening Standard, the same could now happen with Sami Khedira.
Indeed, Chelsea are said to be ready to offer the Real Madrid midfielder a pre-contract in January, meaning a move to Stamford Bridge next summer.
Khedira is in the last year of his current deal at the Bernabeu and is said to have rejected several offered extensions. Arsenal, though, have long been linked with the Germany midfielder - just as they were with Fabregas.
Reports suggest the Gunners did not sign the 27-year-old this summer due to his high wage demands, despite many critics' assertions that a defensive midfielder is just what Wenger needs.
Khedira would certainly be needed a lot more at the Emirates Stadium than at the Bridge, where Nemanja Matic and Fabregas reign supreme in central midfield. But Chelsea could be about to steal another key transfer target from Arsenal's noses all the same.
