Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has been speaking ahead of England under-19s’ match against Belgium.
The 18-year-old agreed his first professional contract at Spurs during the summer, but for now his focus is on international matters.
In an interview with the FA’s official website, Winks said, “Hopefully when we go to the Euros we will be coming up against the best countries so it will be good to play against a side like Belgium.
“You have to beat the best teams if you are going to win the tournament, and that is obviously our aim.”
Wins over Luxembourg and Belarus have already ensured England have reached the final stage of Euro qualifying, but Winks clearly wants to go out on a high and top the group.
The Tottenham youngster also reflected on the event overall, and the fact that he made his first start at this level in the 8-0 win against Luxembourg.
“It was great to get my first start,” he said. “Any time I play for England it’s a great achievement and to win the game as well is brilliant. Hopefully I can get a few more caps now.”
Winks was named on Tottenham’s senior bench for their match against Liverpool last season, and big things are expected of a player who is already making waves for England’s younger sides.
