Rudiger 'not thinking of a change' - Impact for Chelsea and United

Manchester United and Chelsea linked defender Antonio Rudiger isn't set to leave Stuttgart according to Bild.

Antonio Rudiger is not thinking of switching VFB Stuttgart for Chelsea or Manchester United according to German daily tabloid Bild.

The 21-year-old has been suggested as a target for both Premier League sides, but Bild has reported that a transfer is not imminent as he looks to develop with the Bundesliga outfit.

“Since May, Toni has aroused interest, but currently he is not thinking of a change. We are now together with VFB and will then see which way his future goes,” his agent told Bild.

Reports suggest that Chelsea have been after him as they seek out a long term replacement for John Terry in their back four.

However, that doesn’t add up due to the presence and talent possessed by Kurt Zouma and Tomas Kalas, who have both been used by Jose Mourinho as defensive options for the first team.

Rudiger doesn’t appear to promise greater potential than either at the moment, which creates a confusing logic behind any reason to try and sign him as a replacement for one of the club’s greatest ever defenders.

United definitely need another centre back but this option isn’t in the same class as some of the other players United have been linked with; Raphael Varane of Real Madrid and Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund.

United showed over the summer that they have the cash and resources to be able to compete with any club to sign the best players.

The winter transfer window won’t see United spend as big as they did over the course of the summer, but the point is they have the cash to go after their first choice targets, regardless of how difficult signing them may be.

Rudiger is a talented defender but the news of his apparent unavailability won’t come as a major blow to either of the Premier League sides linked with signing him.
