Did West Ham do the best transfer business in the Premier League?

Sam Allardyce Press Conference Disappointed 12/02/2014

Although the likes of Chelsea, Southampton and Hull City operated the transfer market expertly, West Ham United seem to have ticked all the boxes with their summer signings.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

With hindsight, we are able to tell which of the Premier League's summer signings have hit the ground running and which, in some cases rather spectacularly, haven't.

And, seven league games into the season, there is one man who comes off best when considered with hindsight: West Ham boss Sam Allardyce.

Indeed, Allardyce's summer signings have helped the Hammers start the current campaign with a bang, even if some old faces, namely Stewart Downing, have done their fair bit for the east London side.

Would it be going too far to suggest West Ham did the best transfer business in the top flight this summer gone?

The obvious counterargument would be that Chelsea made easily the best signings going into the current campaign. The Blues' hefty budget, however, as well as their reputation throughout Europe in terms of attracting players, are factors that downplay Chelsea's achievements in the market somewhat.

Southampton and Hull City, too, did well in the transfer window, with Steve Bruce's Tigers excelling on Deadline Day, while the Saints extracted huge sums for those they sold, replacing them with players of equal talent.

There still remains the argument, though, that West Ham have trumped them all. Not only has Allardyce got his team performing at a much higher level this term, he has changed the identity of his side's football - something Hammers fans have been craving for some time.

Diafro Sakho has got the goals, Aaron Cresswell has created the chances - and Mauro Zarate, Enner Valencia & more have all helped transform the West Ham neutrals have become used to seeing over the years.

Whether their form can last the season at Upton Park is another matter, of course. But the Hammers' summer signings are certainly impressing for now.
