Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann has revealed that Arsenal were interested in his services in the summer transfer windown.
The France international, who played at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, moved to Atletico from fellow La Liga club Real Sociedad in July for a reported transfer fee of £24 million.
One of the best players in Europe, Griezmann was long destined to leave Sociedad for a bigger and more ambitious club. During his time at La Real, the 23-year-old established himself as a versatile player who can feature as a winger or as a forward.
There were reports in the summer that Arsenal were interested in Griezmann, and the player himself has now confirmed those claims.
'Why Spain and not elsewhere? This is my championship, my home', Goal.com quotes him as telling France Football. 'I'm happy here and Atletico is a great club. The [champions] were willing to pay €30 million [£23.8m] for me.
'I had the boss on the phone. He motivated me and said the club really wanted me. I knew that I was coming here to learn. Was it weird when PSG and Arsenal were also interested? [Atletico are] still the champions of Spain!
'I needed a club like that and a coach like Diego Simeone to progress. I always demands intensity in training. That's my style and I like it'.
It seems that Griezmann snubbed Arsenal (and Paris Saint-Germain) to join Atletico. And it is the best decision for all parties concerned.
Arsenal do not have the need for Griezmann or a player of his type at this moment in time, while joining PSG would have almost certainly have made him a squad player.
At Atletico and working with Diego Simeone, Griezmann is only going to improve and develop his game. He has played well so far this season, having created six chances in seven La Liga appearances while having a pass accuracy of 82%.
