Former Newcastle United star Chris Waddle says the team are playing for their manager.
Former Newcastle United star and football pundit Chris Waddle has asked fans to get behind the team and given his backing to Alan Pardew.
With the Toon in the relegation zone, fans have vented their anger as of late, and manager Pardew is viewed as fortunate to have escaped the axe.
Waddle believes the team is showing positive signs, and the boss has not lost the dressing room, evidenced by their fightback against Swansea.
He told ChronicleLive: "The one thing you do not want when walking on to the pitch is fans holding banners up with ‘manager out’.
“The players are still playing for Pardew so he must be doing something right.
“I was at the Stoke City game and Newcastle played very well. They just could not grab a goal.
“They dug in against Swansea and got a good result after going down to 2-0, so you cannot say the players are not giving it everything."
There comes a point however, that even the efforts of players is not enough, and with four points from seven games many would feel it has reached that already.
