United morning news: Duo impress for countries; £4m January priority

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney proved the hero for England on Sunday afternoon, scoring the winner against Estonia in their latest Euro 2016 qualifying match.

The goal took Rooney tantalisingly close to becoming England’s top-scorer of all time.

Another United player was on international duty yesterday, with David de Gea finally given the nod in goal for Spain ahead of Iker Casillas. And the young stopper did not disappoint, keeping a clean-sheet in a 4-0 win away to Luxembourg.

In other news, following reports over the weekend that Ron Vlaar is a January target for United, the Mirror has picked up on claims that Louis van Gaal has now made the Aston Villa centre-back a priority.

The latest reports claim a fee in the region of £4million could be enough to secure the Dutchman’s signature given that by then he will be in the final six months of his current contract.
