A player previously tipped to join Tottenham Hotspur seems perfectly happy in Portugal for now.
Tottenham Hotspur have long been linked with Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan, with the rumours revving up every transfer window for the last two seasons.
But the Argentine international’s future seems a little more clear following comments from his agent later published by Portuguese newspaper A Bola.
“Gaitan is happy at Benfica and has a year and a half left on his current contract,” the player’s representative Jose Iribarren is quoted as saying.
“He will see out his contract.”
That means the former alleged Tottenham target will remain in the Primeira Liga until at least the summer of 2016, by which time he will be 28 and still an attractive proposition for clubs seeking a very talented winger.
In truth Tottenham have probably ended any interest in the player following the emergence of Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela – two players who have shown this season that patience really can be a virtue when it comes to football signings.
But with Gaitan’s agent seemingly ruling out a move for another couple of years, if those rumours surrounding Spurs do boil up again next summer, they can be swiftly dismissed.
