United morning news: Star to get new deal; January defender move linked

Michael Carrick

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will reportedly be offered a new one-year extension to his contract.

The England international’s current deal expires in the summer of 2015, but the Sun claims Louis van Gaal is set to offer him an extension, despite the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder not playing for the Dutchman thus far due to injury.

In other news, the Sunday Express claims United are considering a January move for Aston Villa centre-back Ron Vlaar.

The Netherlands international was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer, and with a contract that expires in less than 12 months the Dutchman could be a cheap but effective solution to their ongoing defensive problems.

That said, Vlaar has recently said he will discuss a possible new deal at Villa Park so only time will tell where he is playing next season.
