Spurs morning news: Star on ‘frustrating’ season and ex-player on why he retired

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend has been speaking about his goal-scoring exploits for England.

The Spurs wide-man is struggling for game-time at White Hart Lane, so it seems his best chance of impressing Mauricio Pochettino in the short-term is to continue shining for his country.

The 23-year-old scored England’s fourth goal in their 5-0 win against San Marino last week and in an interview with the FA’s official website, he has revealed Wembley brings out the best in him.

“I’ve scored here before and seem to save my best goals and performances for Wembley,” Townsend said.

“It’s been a frustrating season for me and I was pleased that the manager showed faith in me.”

Now the trick is to get back into Tottenham’s first-team, which will be easier said than done.

In other news, the Sunday People has an interview with former Tottenham player David Bentley, who has revealed why he retired from the game before the age of 30.

“Whether my career reached the heights it could or should have done, certain people are built for the life of a footballer but I don’t think I was,” he said.

“I didn’t give up while I had a contract, I just decided that my future was outside of football."
