Robbie Keane breaks goalscoring record with 12 minute Euro hat trick

Shining once again for Ireland, the former Tottenham and Liverpool striker is edging closer to being one of Europe's best ever goal scorers.

Ireland's European Championship qualifier with new Uefa 'nation' Gibraltar was always going to be one of their easiest games in recent years, and so it proved as the Green Army steamrolled the tiny island side with a 7-0 hammering.

Though it was a resounding result, one familiar Irish player was particularly effective in the game, breaking another record within the first 20 minutes of the kickoff.

Captain Robbie Keane was quick to punish his opponents as soon as he took to the pitch, netting a hat trick in just 12 minutes to put Ireland 3-0 up.

Scoring on 6 and 14 minutes with neat finishes and then with a penalty on 18 minutes, the former Premier League star, who has also turned out for Liverpool for a short spell, also played a part in several of his teammates strikes as the match finished 7-0.

That the Spurs legend still has the same energy and passion for the game despite turning 34 in July is some testament to his attitude.

Keane scored 122 goals for the North Londoners during his 8 seasons at the club, placing him in Tottenham's all time top 10 goal scorers, but the Dubliner continues to stretch his lead at the top of the Irish goalscoring charts and now has a phenomenal 65 goals from 136 games.

His hat-trick against Gibraltar also moved him out front when it comes to European Championship qualifying goals, and just 3 short of Gerd Muller's all time record for a European of 68.

And if he keeps playing as well as he is for LA Galaxy in the MLS and the Irish national team, surely it's only a matter of time until he surpasses it.
