Jamie Carragher: Liverpool tried to buy Vidic in 2006

Jamie Carragher has revealed that Liverpool tried to buy Nemanja Vidic in 2006.

The Serbian centre-back was at Spartak Moscow at the time, with the Reds the defending European champions back then.

Rafa Benitez's interest obviously wasn't enough to land the defender, however, as he joined Manchester United that year.

Vidic spent several years at United thereafter, enjoying an illustrious career at Old Trafford, although Fernando Torres occasionally terrorised him when he played against Liverpool.

In his weekly column for the Daily Mail, Carragher placed Vidic in his all-time Premier League XI (at centre-back), writing:

"My type of defender. Liverpool tried to buy him in January 2006 but our loss was United's gain. I'd have loved to have played alongside him and I'm sure we could have formed a solid partnership.

"He loves defending and putting his head in where it hurts. His arrival took Ferdinand's performances up another level. They became the best defensive pairing in Europe."

Vidic left Man United to join Inter Milan this summer, ending an eight-year stay in Manchester.
