A report in German tabloid Bild this morning suggested that Hamburg have exercised their right to make Lewis Holtby’s loan move from Spurs permanent, after he played enough games for the German club.
The deal is thought to be worth £5 million and means Holtby won’t get the chance to return to Tottenham Hotspur and become a key part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans as he tries to consolidate Spurs as a top four team.
Spurs fans were left downbeat when it was announced that Holtby, a popular player with supporters, was returning to the Bundesliga after a frustrating spell at White Hart Lane.
He worked his socks off whenever he was needed by Spurs but simply didn’t have the first team chances he thought he was going to get which led to a loan move to Fulham before this transfer to Hamburg this season.
He’s unfortunate because central midfield is one of the most competitive parts of the current Spurs squad whereas new bodies are definitely needed for Pochettino in other areas of the team.
There are plenty of options for Pochettino in the middle of his team; Etienne Capoue, Nabil Bentaleb, Paulinho, Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen to give an example of the selection headache Pochettino has on a weekly basis.
Holtby is a tidy player, who is good in possession and someone who is also versatile and can play in a number of different roles, but he’s not imposing and as a small man he could often get overpowered by physical teams.
After a couple of moves around, hopefully he can now settle back down into Bundesliga football and it’s encouraging from Spurs fans that they can afford to expand with such a high quality player.
Here’s what Tottenham fans had to say about Holtby’s apparent permanent exit from the club via Twitter.
Soldado to Inter : Okay. Huntelaar to Spurs : Yay! :D Holtby to Hamburg : NOOOO!!! :(— Fandy Puriandi (@fpuriandi) October 10, 2014
Shame things didn't work out at Spurs with Holtby - hope he becomes the player we all want him to be.— Craig Harlow (@HarlowC) October 10, 2014
No doubt Holtby will do well elsewhere. Just not at Spurs, we just don't seem to have an on-field role for him.— Rhodes (@Tom_Rhodes) October 10, 2014
Weird that Holtby has signed for Hamburg if true. They look like they could be in a massive relegation struggle again this season. #THFC— AtourT (@AT_Spurs) October 10, 2014
We've been dire in the Europa and Capital One so far. No creativity/ urgency. And people still want to make out Holtby has no place at Spurs— GavinWA (@GAV_GWA) October 10, 2014
Can't believe we have moved Holtby on for 5m and kept Paulinho and Bentaleb #spurs— Jack Jago (@jackjago1) October 10, 2014
Spurs fans saying Holtby was just "ok", like our other midfielders have been producing stellar 9/10 performances weekly. They haven't.— GavinWA (@GAV_GWA) October 10, 2014
Thoughts with the Spurs TV family right now following the news of Holtby's imminent departure— SPURStalk (@SPURS_talk_) October 10, 2014
Daniel Levy has always done well negotiating outgoing transfers- they've just sold Lewis Holtby for double what they paid. Wow #THFC— Tough Tackler (@thetoughtackler) October 10, 2014
How are we only taking 6.5 for Holtby. Whoever accepted that bid seriously doesn't rate Lewis at all wtf. #THFC— Man Like (@Wezo3000) October 10, 2014
