Tottenham Hotspur's Andros Townsend says that the current season has been frustrating for him so far.
The Spurs winger has been out of form at White Hart Lane for some time and he admits that this season hasn't gone according to plan, but he still managed to it the back of the net for Englad last night.
Townsend spoke out in praise of England manager Roy Hodgson - after he stuck by him and selected him for the Three Lions European qualifiers this week.
He seems to be lifted by pulling on a Three Lions shirt and he scored again in his nation's 5-0 win over San Marino last night.
Although it was a game which England were expected to win, Townsend would have been pleased to get on the scoresheet after struggling to find the net recently and he has thanked Hodgson for keeping the faith in him.
“I was pleased, it has been a frustrating season for me so far but here I am pleased as the manager has shown faith in me,” Townsend is quoted as saying by London 24.
“Although it was only San Marino tonight I have repaid that faith with another goal."
“I have scored here before; it seems I save my best goals and performances for Wembley.”
The hope for Spurs is that this goal will give Towsend the confidence to push on at club level when he returns to action and start showing the form which made him such a hit when he burst onto the scene.
The 23-year-old is naturally positive in possession, but his play has become too predictable in recent times and an injury seems to have cost him a yard of pace.
He has had to take a backseat role at White Hart Lane since Mauricio Pochettino's arrival and many felt that the likes of Swansea City's Wayne Routledge were more worthy of a call-up.
However, Townsend will feel that he has proven Hodgson's judgement correct by hitting the net and the goal should have ensured his place for the next few fixtures, too.
He will also be hoping that Pochettino was impressed enough with his cameo appearance to give him a starting berth.
Spurs have struggled for goals so far this campaign and an on-form Townsend will certainly give them an added threat, as they look to get into the top four.
