‘What happens to Thomas Vermaelen?’ is the way Sport has headline their story over the current situation surrounding former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.
Arsene Wenger was criticised for selling Vermaelen and not replacing him during the summer transfer window, but it’s turned out to be a justified decision as the Belgian is still waiting to make his first appearance for Barca in a competitive game.
Sport claims fans are growing discontented with the situation surrounding the former Arsenal star, especially with Gerard Pique forced out into the cold by head coach Luis Enrique.
“It’s a situation which has set off alarms among fans, taking into account the Belgian cost £15 million and still hasn’t been made available to the coach,” reports Sport.
Vermaelen has been training alone during the international break, after appearing in a friendly for the side against the Indonesian under-19 side, which also provided Luis Suarez with a chance to get some match practice.
Enrique and the club’s officials won’t be at all bothered by the attention and pressure from fans on the situation surrounding Vermaelen, because it’s Barcelona and they have had to deal with fan pressure before.
The situation also explains why Manchester United didn’t move on reports of their interest in Vermaelen, with Louis van Gaal clearly wary of when he would be available based on his physical condition at the time.
Wenger moved in and brought in Calum Chambers from Southampton to provide cover in defence and Louis van Gaal opted to push Tyler Blackett forward from the youth ranks and into the first team.
The only player who can ease the fan pressure on Barca is Vermaelen and he can’t do that until he’s fit and selected.
