William Carvalho, 22, was heavily linked to Manchester United and Arsenal over the summer, and the tone of his most recent press conference suggests a move to Old Trafford or The Emirates is still very much on his radar.
''I would not say I was disappointed,'' claimed Carvalho.
''But despite being very happy at Sporting I have ambitions and hope one day to play in the best leagues in the world, the English or Spanish.
''It did not happen this year, but if you continue to do my job as I have been doing for sure that sooner or later it will happen.''
On the interest over the summer, Carvalho explained despite interest no-one could match the clause.
''I understand the proposals, but I think that there was no value for the clause and therefore have been refused.''
The 22-year-old Portugal international is widely considered one of the top young players in the world, and his form in the Primeira Liga seems to get better and better each game.
The all-action midfielder has been at the heart of everything good about Sporting this season, winning many plaudits, but has found it difficult to find the back of the net from his deep-lying position.
Last season, in the same defensive midfield role, he scored four goals for Sporting in all competitions and many hoped he would add that edge to his game this season.
Nevertheless, he has continued to show the potential and class which lead Manchester United to his door in the first place. And If he continues in a similar vein and United don't follow up their interest, they may later live to regret it.
Carvalho is contracted to Sporting until 2018, with his termination clause set at €45 million.
