The Premier League football may have stopped for the international break but the rumour mill certainly hasn’t with a tasty transfer link appearing suggesting Chelsea could be after Liverpool star Raheem Sterling.
An initial price doing the rounds is £48 million which would represent great value for Liverpool although there are so many things wrong with the rumour, it’s difficult to know where to start.
The first problem is that Sterling is meant to be in talks with the Reds over a new long term contract.
His representatives are able to chat with Liverpool through the international break and it’s no surprise they want to hang onto him, with the play expressing no previous desire to move away from Anfield.
Secondly, Brendan Rodgers doesn’t appear to be the sort of manager who would sell one of his best players to a direct rival.
Liverpool showed last season that they can now be considered Premier League title rivals to Chelsea and they have a shout this time round, despite an inconsistent start to the new campaign.
The Reds are also embarking on a Champions League journey, as they look to react to away defeat to Basel when they host Real Madrid, the reigning champions, in the next round of games.
There’s also Sterling’s position to consider, which would mean no guarantee of playing time at Chelsea even if he did move to Stamford Bridge.
He’s first choice at Liverpool but that may not be the case at Chelsea, with Oscar and Cesc Fabregas able to play in the hole behind the main striker and Eden Hazard and Andre Schurrle currently holding the wide positions.
Jose Mourinho does like to make his rivals weaker but there’s no reason as to why Liverpool would press the self destruct button.
Here’s what Liverpool fans have made of the rumours on Twitter.
