Spain suffered a setback in their quest to qualify for the 2016 European Championship on Thursday as they went down 2-1 to Slovakia away from home.
The defeat in the Group C clash at the Stadion pod Dubnom in Zilina was La Furia Roja’s first in eight years and came as a massive shock.
Juraj Kucka opened the scoring for hosts Slovakia in the 17th minute with a 30-yard free kick that was misjudged by Spain and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
Valencia striker Paco Alcacer, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, equalised for the 2008 and 2012 European champions on 82 minutes.
However, there was yet more drama to come in Zilina, as former Chelsea player Miroslav Stoch headed home a Michal Duris cross from close range on 87 minutes to wrap up a 2-1 win for Slovakia.
The defeat was Spain’s first in 37 World Cup and European Championship qualifying matches, a run stretching back to 2006, and left football followers around the world stunned.
