Arsenal morning news: Khedira can be new Vieira, says Invincible; Ox on England

Sami Khedira warming up

All the latest news and gossip from The Emirates Stadium this morning.

Arsenal can win the Premier League this season according to one of their infamous Invincibles - but only if they sign a specific player.

Robert Pires believes Arsenal still have a chance of Premier League success, but will need to sign Sami Khedira if they are to do so.

The German World Cup winner has been heavily linked with a move to The Emirates for many months now and with his contract expiring next summer his availability has been at the forefront of Arsenal's attentions for several months now.

Reports have already suggested Arsenal will offer him a £100,000-a-week in order to sign for the club in January - and Pires is hoping those rumours are true. As he feels Khedira could be the club's new Patrick Vieira.

He told The Telegraph:

"He [Wenger] needs a big player in the middle, like Viera, strong, tall, because this position is very important for the balance between attack and defence.

"The quality is there but you need more, maybe [someone] like Yaya Toure in middle. He reminds me of Patrick Vieira, maybe they have an opportuniuty with Khedira. It is likely in the January window. He played very well with Germany. My advice is if he can buy Khedira he can be the [new] Vieira, more aggression in the middle. He has a lot of experience. When you play in the middle you need experience, especially when your midfield is young like Arsenal's."

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who played well for England against San Marino yesterday, has spoken of the Arsenal core being a big boost for England on the international stage.

He and Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshere, Calum Chambers and Kieran Gibbs all played alongside each other last night, and the Ox believes that can only be good for England:

“Being at Arsenal I’ve felt that [English] presence around our dressing room and to be able to come away with England with so many of your team-mates is a really nice feeling. I think it’s really good for England and I think it’s nice for Arsenal as a club and the fans and we’ve still got Theo Walcott to come back. We can’t count him out because I’m sure he’ll be back in the squad.”
