Wayne Rooney says he is 'disappointed' to have been sent off against West Ham United in the Premier League.

The Manchester United striker kicked Stewart Downing above the knee and duly received his marching orders in a game his side held on to win 2-1.

But Rooney insists it was not an intentional foul - and he was not frustrated like during previous sending-offs.

"I was disappointed to receive the red card," the Manchester United and England captain told reporters.

"I said afterwards everyone in football understands what I was trying to do and I just mis-timed it.

"It wasn't the same as red cards I've got in the past for lashing out. I tried to stop a counter attack and misjudged it."

Louis van Gaal

Elsewhere, Man United boss Louis van Gaal has reportedly removed the players' lounge that Sir Alex Ferguson built 21 years ago.

The Dutchman is said to have done so in a bid to get stricter on his players and remove all possible distractions.
