Many of Liverpool's players are currently away on international duty, and manager Brendan Rodgers was hoping to have a fully fit squad at his disposal upon their return next week after seeing Emre Can, Joe Allen and Daniel Sturridge suffer injuries during the last international break. Yet with the trio missing crucial games, Rodgers won't be happy to hear that centre back Dejan Lovren has suffered an injury on international duty with Croatia - especially with Liverpool's Champions League clash with Real Madrid on the horizon.
Lovren's impending absence means that Slovakian Martin Skrtel may well be called upon alongside Kolo Toure or Mamadou Sakho, and Skrtel has today been opening up about life at Liverpool alongside Mario Balotelli. Balotelli joined the Reds from AC Milan for £16m in August, but arrived with a controversial reputation after a number of off field issues, but Skrtel says that the striker is nothing like what the media say he is.
"Mario has not fully opened up to us," he said. "But I think that the stories about him are not always true. When I met him I found out that he is totally different person than the way he is presented."
Meanwhile, on the transfer front, Liverpool continue to be linked with a move to sign midfielder Alex Song. The Cameroon international was reportedly a target for the Reds over the summer as Barcelona looked to sell the former Arsenal man, but he ended up joining West Ham on loan for the season. However, his impressive start to the season at Upton Park means that speculation suggests that Liverpool will monitor his progress ahead of a potential summer move.
