Gareth Southgate updates Carl Jenkinson situation

The England Under-21 management have sent the West Ham United defender, on loan from Arsenal, back to the Boleyn Ground.

"Carl [Jenkinson] has gone back to West Ham [United]," confirmed England Under-21 manager Gareth Southgate to Sky Sports earlier this evening, Thursday.

Jenkinson was a number of established stars at club-level to be called up to the Young Lions squad, along with Manchester United full back Luke Shaw, West Bromwich Albion forward Saido Berahino and even Tottenham Hotspur's emerging centre back Eric Dier.

However, Jenkinson - who is on loan at West Ham United from parent club Arsenal for the duration of the season - has been sent back to the Boleyn Ground as the right back will not be able to train, let alone compete, because of an injury sustained prior to his call-up.

"He had had a hamstring injury before last weekend and after the game against Queens Park Rangers it had not quite settled down - he has not been able to train with us this week.

"We feel it's unlikely he would be ready for the second game and that it would be better that he goes back to work with his club."
